Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in First Address
During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.
Rejecting suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”
Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

- A rent freeze for about 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
